Cat grooming: YES or NO?

22 April 2024

Despite some criticism that occasionally arises around cat grooming, we can confidently say that grooming helps the cat rather than harms it. Those who disagree are mostly people who lack sufficient information about the process.

When is grooming necessary? If the coat becomes matted beyond brushing, grooming relieves the animal of pain and discomfort. It is also recommended for skin conditions, during hot weather (especially for fluffy breeds) and before surgical procedures.

How does the procedure work? At our salon we use quiet, safe clippers, work gently and take breaks so the cat does not become stressed. Grooming is done in the presence of the owner (unless the cat is a calm animal).

Important: grooming does not disrupt thermoregulation as long as you don't shave the cat completely. We leave at least 2–3 mm, which protects the skin from sun and cold. After grooming, the coat grows back within 2–3 months.

If your cat has no mats and feels perfectly well, grooming is not necessary. But if you decide to go ahead, choose only a professional salon with experience in cat grooming.
